Common Mistakes in Technical Writing:

Grammatical Errors

Singular / Plural disagreement

e.g.
1)

X -- The effect of temperature, notch, strain rate and microstructure on these properties were discussed...-- X

Better -->
O -- The effects of temperature, notch, strain rate and microstructure on these properties were discussed...-- O

e.g.
2)

X -- The fatigue life prediction for the materials containing defects and notches were conducted...-- X

Better -->
O -- The fatigue life prediction for the materials containing defects and notches was conducted... -- O

Preposition error / article error

e.g.

X -- ...although the fungus exhibited significant growth on the both conditions... -- X

Better -->
O -- ...although the fungus exhibited significant growth under both conditions... -- O

This uses the correct preposition (under). The definite article (the) is not necessary.

Grammatical Error -- Incorrect use of perfect tense.

e.g.

X -- ...the chemical structure has not (been) made clear completely...-- X

Better -->
O -- ...the chemical structure is not completely understood... -- O

This construction uses the simple present tense which is more appropriate than the use of the perfect tense in the first example.

Style error -- use of 'we' / Grammatical error -- verb usage.

e.g.
1)

X -- ...we thought that it should be resemble to that of lignin... -- X

Better -->
O -- ... it is thought to resemble that of lignin... -- O

This uses the passive (it is thought) and infinitive (to resemble) verb forms which are more appropriate for technical writing.

e.g.
2)

X -- ...we couldn't separate the extracellular extract ... -- X

Better -->
O -- ... it was not possible to separate the extracellular extract... -- O

This uses the passive (it was not possible) and infinitive (to separate) verb forms which are more appropriate for technical writing.

NB -- What WE DID is not important -- What WAS DONE is important.

Word order -- passive voice

e.g.

X -- On the other hand, at the coil edge is formed the clearance... -- X

Better -->
O -- On the other hand, the clearance is formed at the coil edge... -- O

Incorrect use of Passive voice / incorrect adjective / incorrect use of preposition

e.g.

X -- Fig.4 is shown how the rotor dimensions and operation conditions affect on mastication of natural rubber -- X

Better -->
O -- Fig.4 shows how the rotor dimensions and operating conditions affect the mastication of natural rubber.-- O

Incorrect use of noun as adjective / 'of' phrase

e.g.

X -- The rotor types were changed ... for improvement productivity of a mixer.-- X

Better -->
O -- The rotor types were changed ... for improved mixer productivity.-- O

Subject/verb disagreement / adjective distant from noun / pronoun use

e.g.

X -- This means that the dispersion of TiO2 in the master batch produced by rotor segments are better than one produced by kneading disks.-- X

Better -->
O -- This means that the dispersion of TiO2 was better in the master batch produced by rotor segments than in the master batch produced by kneading disks.-- O
