Decimal expressions are read in a special way.

e.g.

This is read as 'two point six'

 

This is read as 'thirty-nine point nine-five'

i.e. the figures before the decimal point (.) are read normally but the figures after the decimal point are read individually.

 

This is read as:

'two hundred (and) sixty-seven point seven-three-eight'

This is read as:

'(zero) point six-three-two'

is read as ' a half'

(or one-half)

 

   or   

is read as 'two-thirds'

 

  or  

is read as 'three-quarters'

(or three-fourths)

 

  or  

is read as 'four-fifths'

 

  or   

is read as 'five-sixths'

 

  or   

is read as 'seven-eighths'

 

NB: If there is a whole number and a fraction we use 'and'.

e.g.

is read as 'forty-five and a quarter'

(or forty-five and a fourth)

NB: The colon ( : ) which indicates a ratio is read as 'to'.
