Taking a message


Mr. Sherwood, who works in the procurement section of a U.S. car manufacturer, phones Mr. Yamaguchi at KCRL to discuss details of his scheduled visit. Mr. Yamaguchi is away on a business trip. Ms. Yamashita takes the call.

Yamashita: Kobe seiko sho de gozaimasu..

Sherwood: Err...This is Max Sherwood from Mercury Automobiles. Could I speak to Mr. Yamaguchi, please?

Yamashita: I'm sorry, Mr. Yamaguchi is away on a business trip. Can I take a message?

Sherwood: Yes. I have an appointment to see Mr. Yamaguchi and visit your laboratories on March 16th. Unfortunately, I've had to change my travel plans and can't make it on that day, so I'd like to arrange another time.

Yamashita: I see.

Sherwood: Could you have him call me when he gets back from his trip?

Yamashita: Certainly. May I have your name again, please?

Sherwood: Max Sherwood.

Yamashita: Could you spell that, please?

Sherwood: M-A-X. S-H-E-R-W-O-O-D.

Yamashita: And your telephone number?

Sherwood: Six -oh-two four-five-four three-eight-oh-seven (602-454-3807).

Yamashita: That's six -oh-two four-five-four three-oh-eight-seven (602-454-3087)?

Sherwood: No. three-eight-oh-seven (3807).

Yamashita: Oh, I see, sorry. So you can't come on March 16th, and you'd like Mr. Yamaguchi to phone you as soon as possible to arrange another day.

Sherwood: That's correct.

Yamashita: I'll have him call you when he returns.

Sherwood: Thanks. 'Bye.

Yamashita: Goodbye.
